LONGUES-SUR-MER. GERMAN BATTERY
The German battery at Longues-sur-Mer was one of many coastal fortifications forming part of the Atlantic Wall, a vast defensive system built along Europe’s coastline to protect against an Allied invasion. It is the best-preserved coastal battery in Normandy, retaining its original 152 mm guns manufactured by Škoda in Czechoslovakia. On 6 June 1944, its position between Omaha Beach and Gold Beach made it a significant threat to both landing sectors and the Allied naval forces offshore.
ARROMANCHES-LES-BAINS. THE ARTIFICIAL HARBOR
One of the greatest feats of British engineering in the 20th century was the construction of the artificial harbor also known as “Mulberry B.” It was Winston Churchill’s idea, designed to deliver all the necessary supplies to the Allied forces so they could defeat the German army in Normandy.
GOLD BEACH. THE GERMAN BATTERY AT MONT FLEURY
The story of Stanley Hollis (Green Howards Regiment), the only soldier awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery on June 6, the highest decoration in the British and Commonwealth armed forces.
BRITISH MEMORIAL. VER-SUR-MER
6 June 1944. As he advances inland from Gold Beach with his men, Company Sergeant Major Stanley Hollis of the Green Howards Regiment spots two German pillboxes at a location known as “Le Mont Fleuri”. Displaying exceptional courage, he storms and neutralises both positions, single-handedly taking 30 prisoners. This remarkable act of bravery earns him the only Victoria Cross (the highest military decoration for gallantry) awarded for actions on 6 June 1944, securing this episode of D-Day a permanent place in the military history of the Normandy Landings.
