dday-normandy-guide - batteries allemandes longues-sur-mer

LONGUES-SUR-MER. GERMAN BATTERY

The German battery at Longues-sur-Mer was one of many coastal fortifications forming part of the Atlantic Wall, a vast defensive system built along Europe’s coastline to protect against an Allied invasion. It is the best-preserved coastal battery in Normandy, retaining its original 152 mm guns manufactured by Škoda in Czechoslovakia. On 6 June 1944, its position between Omaha Beach and Gold Beach made it a significant threat to both landing sectors and the Allied naval forces offshore.

ARROMANCHES-LES-BAINS. THE ARTIFICIAL HARBOR

One of the greatest feats of British engineering in the 20th century was the construction of the artificial harbor also known as “Mulberry B.” It was Winston Churchill’s idea, designed to deliver all the necessary supplies to the Allied forces so they could defeat the German army in Normandy.

JUNO BEACH. MIKE GREEN SECTOR

The beach where the “Canadian Scottish Regiment” and General de Gaulle landed on June 14, 1944, is commemorated by the monument, the Lorraine Cross. Visitors can tour the museum at the “Juno Center”.
